1/10/13 Best New Records 2012

Can - The Lost Tapes Box Set

JK Flesh - Posthuman

The Fall - Night Of The Humerons

Yes Night Of The Humerons is the only track The Fall have released this year. Yes The Fall are good enough and that track is good enough to make this list. That and any Fall live shows this year blow anything on this list out of the water. The keyboard intro is classic BBC Polyphonic Workshop. Mark E Smith's vocal refrain is both humorous and eerie. Does this song remind anybody else of Trans Am?

Hellwell - Beyond The Boundaries Of Sin

Forward Strategy Group - Labour Division

Hawkwind Light Orchestra - Stellar Variations

Vatican Shadow - Kneel Before Religious Icons

In a just world Vatican Shadow would have done the soundtrack for Zero Dark Thirty.

EMT With Bandaid list #1 - The Fall -

EMT With Bandaid list #31 - Heldon - French space rock, incorporating early electronics and moog synthesizers. Guitarist and sole bandmember Richard Pinhas, influenced by Robert Fripp, plays guitar leads that crash against densely arranged electronics. Pinhas, a former philosophy professor, collaborated with new wave sci fi writer Norman Spinrad on a number of Heldon's recordings. Norman Spinrad is author of EMT reading list must Bug Jack Barron, among others.

EMT With Bandaid list #32 - Tackhead - When compared to the increasingly cleaner sounding records produced in the 80s Tackhead is all Fourth Of July explosives shoved into a plastic New Coke bottle, a DIY bomb. A collaborative effort, Tackhead was The Sugarhill Gang with across the pond collaborator Adrian Sherwood. Sherwood and occasional Tackhead vocalist Mark Stewart are both EMT favorites; Sherwood, the dub and post-punk uber producer, for having recorded the Fall LPs 'Slates' and 'Extricate', Stewart originally for his work with The Pop Group. The records Tackhead cut might be called Industrial Hip Hop, but music like this largely tosses genre out the window. The fuse is lit, those firecrackers, wrapped in duct tape, sure do explode.

Dracula sucks! Why is Dracula shelved in the classics section when other greater works of fantasy/horror/sci-fi are not? Bram Stoker is an uninspired writer of exploitation pulp. Why did Dracula get invited to sit with the cool kids, literary authors who get to dabble in genre while avoiding the stigma of not being 'literary' that genre writers carry their whole career. Anthony Burgess, George Orwell, you can have Dracula, as unfitting a work of genre to join your ranks as any. I don't want my genre classics rubbing book boards with 'the classics' anyhow.
